The VR Den’s inside scoop on their event at Twenty Twenty Two…

As you may have previously seen advertised through our online presence, we threw a Virtual Reality tournament on the weekend of the 26th – 27th of August down in Manchester’s very own Northern Quarter, niche Ping-Pong club, Twenty Twenty Two.

From our entrance at 1pm, and after a bit of mucking around with the layout of the room we had hired, then finalising the room scale set-up, we were ready to welcome the pub’s audience as our own. And BAM! 2 hours clocked past without a soul entering the premise.

The first challengers that arrived set the bar very high, scoring a whopping 9360 in the Longbow and 98.6% in Audioshield. This didn’t stop the other players that followed trying their best to beat them.

We had an array of different people sampling our VR set-up, beginning with a tipsy, fun-seeking Hen’s party, a couple of hard-to-impress soldiers (which we ended up trialling some different games and won them over with a shooter called Onward), some eager tourists, and last but not least, our very likeminded gaggle of hard-core gamers.

The best part of this event were the responses. There were those that created an impatiently enthusiastic desire to play simply from spectating friends of friends. Some underwent an emotional rollercoaster starting off unsure about the unknown world of VR and then moving on to develop a complete sense of joy and amazement. Some even went as far as to comment that it was their best experience ever of the digital world.

We were even supported by a visit from a passionate organiser from the Manchester Virtual Reality Meet-Up team Luca Mefisto, who enjoyed his time with his friends.

Incredibly, it was the lad who first played Audioshield that remained undefeated after our 2-day gig. As for Longbow’s side of the scoreboard, it seemed almost too difficult a task to tackle the initial 9360. It wasn’t until 1am on Saturday that one challenger, drenched in sweat and out of breath pushed their way to the top of the leaderboard with a score of 11035. It was beautiful to witness this feat.

The winners each took home their well-deserved Amazon Echo Dot as a trophy.

Onward – the best military simulation in the VR world?

In this game, players will use coordination, communication, and marksmanship skills to complete objectives in online infantry combat. If you think that reloading weapons take only one swing or a press of the button, then you are wrong! It is as close to reality as it can be, for example, the style used to reload weapons. And so it begins… Our first step towards sharing a better Virtual Reality experience within Greater Manchester!

This Bank Holiday weekend down at Twenty Twenty Two, we will be hosting a FABULOUS tournament.

A £4 ticket will secure you a chance to battle for the highest score on either Audioshield or Longbow from The Lab.

Winners will be announced on our Twitter and Facebook, and will be contacted to claim their prize of an amazing Amazon Echo Dot.

Audioshield: Best VR game out there?

Audioshield will quickly get your heartrate up as the blue and orange balls come flying towards you in this Space Invaders/Guitar Hero-esque Virtual Reality game. To the rythm of your favourite songs from your computer or YouTube, Audioshield allows you to take on various difficulties with increasing activity and wider angles.
